Tips for Photographing the Perfect Kiss

When love is in the air, it’s time to grab your camera and capture the perfect kiss. If you’re covering an event like a wedding or engagement party and need a plan for snapping the happy couple, or you’d like to snatch magic moments among the crowd, we’re sharing a few tried and tested tips for you today. And, if you’re on a mission to photograph a couple selfie for yourself that will make its way from social media onto canvas, we’ve got some tips for you too!

Frame the kiss

Whether you’re zoning in on an intimate moment shared by some party guests or snapping the first kiss between the married couple on a wedding day, you’ll want to capture more than the second they lock lips. The immediate run up to a kiss and aftermath can make for even more beautiful photographs. The tenderness as a couple comes together, a soft smile and a brush of the hand result in a look of love that you’ll want to document. That second where they step apart and look up at each other can be just as magical too.

Give direction

Kissing is an emotional action, which means the couple doing the kissing are generally not thinking about whether a photographer can clearly see both of their faces while they kiss. It can be awkward to direct a kiss while it happens, so if you’re tasked with snapping an important snog, make sure you have a chat before the big event and go through some tips with the couple. You don’t want the kiss to look too staged but a few pointers like leaning in with the body rather than just the head and shoulders can help you to get your shot more easily. Talk about hand placement too – there’s a fine line to be trodden between pulling someone for a tender embrace and something looking a little too forceful.

For formal kisses

At weddings and engagement parties in particular there’s a lot of pressure to snap the perfect kiss. However, you’re likely to come across a few obstacles in your way. From guests with cameras blocking the shot to officiates stepping in shot at the critical moment; you’ll need to be on your toes. What you don’t want to do, however, is tread on the kissing couples toes, so it’s all about striking a balance of getting a good spot without being too close for comfort. Make sure you know where in proceedings the kissing is going to occur, practice different shots, check out the lighting and when the critical moment comes, get in a few shots but don’t go crazy. Don’t risk your arms tiring either; a tripod is an absolute must.

For couple selfie kisses

Taking the perfect photograph of you and your beloved kissing can throw up a lot of problems. You could opt for one person to kiss the other on the cheek so that the other can focus on lining up the camera or smartphone to capture the moment. Throwing caution to the wind with your arm up and above while you kiss and snap away is another way to try and get the shot. You may need a lot of takes to get the photo you’re looking for, but practice makes perfect and after all, kissing is fun. Just make sure you have lip balm at the ready, ay? Finally, you could rely on a time and tripod to help you get the photograph you’re after.
